MÓZG, ul. Parkowa 2

I am thrilled to announce an extraordinary event as part of The Bydgoszcz Experiment Studio project, set to take place at the iconic Mózg Club on July 25 and 26, 2024. This event, deeply rooted in the tradition of BSE, will bring together local and international talents in a unique fusion of sound, music, and interdisciplinary arts. The Bydgoszcz Experiment Studio Event promises to be a ground-breaking exploration of auditory creativity, where sound becomes the central element of artistic expression. Over two days, we will embark on a journey that transcends conventional boundaries, embracing unlimited sound and musical activities, as well as interdisciplinary endeavours, where sound plays a pivotal role.

Event Highlights:
Day 1: July 25, 2024

On the first day, I will take on dual roles as both the curator and the artist, collaborating with two remarkable musicians: Sławek Janicki: Renowned for his mastery of acoustic instruments, Sławek will bring the organic, raw sounds that will serve as the foundation of our project. Free Monoid: A visionary in the realm of modular and analog sound production, Free Monoid will manipulate and transform Sławek’s acoustic sounds using an array of cutting-edge equipment, creating an unparalleled auditory experience.

The day will begin with an introduction and setup, followed by intensive sound collection sessions. Sławek Janicki's acoustic performances will be captured and ingeniously processed by Free Monoid. My role will be to oversee the integration and recording of these sounds, blending them into a cohesive musical session that sets the stage for our final composition.

Day 2: July 26, 2024

The second day will focus on engaging the community and fostering creative collaboration through a hands-on workshop. Participants will join me in inventing and performing a diverse range of sounds, sequences, basslines, and music structures. This interactive workshop will allow participants to directly influence the creation process, contributing to the development of our final piece. The day will culminate in a live presentation of the resulting work, where the combined efforts of all involved will be showcased in a grand finale. This performance will offer an immersive experience, highlighting the unique sounds and compositions crafted during the event.

Audio-visual Documentation

Throughout both days, our activities will be meticulously documented, capturing the essence of the creative process. Interviews with the artists and participants will provide deeper insights into their experiences, and the footage will be edited into a comprehensive film. This documentary will serve as both a record of our project and an inspiring testament to the power of collaborative artistic endeavours.

Join Us

We invite you to be a part of this transformative event, whether as a participant in our workshop or as an audience member during the live presentation. Your presence and engagement will be integral to the success of this project, and we look forward to sharing this unique artistic journey with you.

Peter Śliwiński

Peter Śliwiński

Peter Śliwiński curator is a Polish-Canadian composer, producer, performer, DJ, certified trainer and coach.

Peter's sonic journey is marked by influential releases that have graced over a hundred releases, including labels such as Soleil, Synewave, Infrastructure, Ostgut Ton, Sonic Groove, ARTS and Soma, to name a few. His sound echoed across all continents, setting dance floors on fire from Europe to Asia to the Americas. Peter's live acts are a dynamic mix of electronic music that honors techno's legacy while looking to its future. Peter claims that he heard electronic music for the first time probably right after his birth, in a hospital near Warsaw. It was then that his deep bond with the species began. Hearing the signals! heartbeat, pulse, all the machines were going crazy when, after a difficult delivery, doctors gave him 12 hours to live. Fortunately, his big heart was beating and allowed him to survive. This great heart is still present today through his music.

As a young boy living behind the Iron Curtain, it was not easy to obtain imported music, so one of his first records was a Polish record that his father brought him. It was "E=mc2" by Marek Biliński from 1984, Peter was 9 years old then. He was curious and intrigued by this music-like computer game, which he also heard on his Atari 800XL in elementary school, watching nature programs during classes and watching "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Tron" and "Star Wars" on VHS tapes. Peter's first passions were vinyl records, sci-fi movies, computers, and technology, and that's still the case today.

Peter left Poland around the time of the fall of the Iron Curtain, the techno rave scene was exploding, and Peter was truly about to find himself in the middle of a cyclone. The next stop on his journey was Italy. While listening to local underground radio shows hosted by DJs Francesco Zappala and Fabrizio Cuchetti, and participating in local raves, he was captivated by the sounds of Hip house, early Detroit and techno rave from Italy, the Benelux countries and Europe.

Shortly after that, at the age of 13, Peter, in quite a spectacular way, became a resident of one of the rave venues near Rome. Buying techno vinyl has become a habit. After 2 years he landed in Windsor (near Detroit) and continued his deeper exploration of techno sounds, listening to WMXD - Electrifying Mojo radio in Detroit, discovering the Music Institute in Detroit, and attending parties, but more as an observer than a partygoer. The sounds coming from Detroit, Chicago, New York and even Windsor were already quite familiar to him, through the music he had already played during his residency in Italy. Watching the artists behind these releases play and perform was truly inspiring and Peter wanted to understand how to create his own music.

Reaching this knowledge was not as easy as today ABC - click on me, type of access. It took years to figure this out. While living in Windsor, Peter experienced techno through many sources such as radio, house parties, raves, clubs and even television. New Dance performances in Detroit and Electric Circus in Toronto, Canada quickly became new musical discoveries. After moving to the west coast of Canada, he found himself in the middle of a completely different style of music, deep electronica from San Francisco and techno ambient coming from Vancouver from artists such as Adam Shaik and Off and Gone. Peter soon became part of the scene and slowly but surely began to shape what would become his signature sound during his first sonic experiments in the school's electronic music studio at Port Moody High School.

Electronic, techno and ambient music began to be the main language expressing Peter's inner universe, and he spent more and more time in the school studio, learning on his own about analog equipment, sequencing, sampling and sound processing. While others partied on the weekend, he locked himself in the school studio and recorded many hours of music on cassette or ADAT and put together the first mixes of his live performances using a Korg Sampling Delay, a Roland Synth JX8P with a PG 800 programmer. After building his own home studio and collecting various instruments off the coast of Canada and the USA, he worked on his live act and started performing live. First as DJ VC, Plasmik Muv, Blue Room, Les Autres Circuites, and later as Echoplex. He was soon a resident at Up Above, the World, Graceland and The Twilight Zone at Gas Town Vancouver, and was a frequent guest DJ on DJ Noah's Home Base radio shows on CITR Radio.

Peter started visiting Europe, playing concerts in Poland. He was undoubtedly one of the first true live techno performers to play live across the country, traveling with a Yamaha 24-channel mixing console, an EMU Sp1200 sampler, and Roland TR909 and TR 808 drum machines. Eventually, after completing a Master of sound design course in Canada, In 1998 he returned to Poland. It was then that the Echoplex sound came to prominence, followed by a string of releases on labels such as Black Nation, Mechanism Industries, Cetron, Speaker Attack, Sonic Mind, End to End, LL and appearances on compilations by Ritchie Hawtin, DJ Cajmere, Fumiya Tanaka and many more other. Through projects, alter egos and collaborations, Peter has also licensed his music to Nova Mute, M_nus, Kanzleramt, Missile, Torema, Technique, Solo Action, Abiotic, G-force, Hertz, Mosquito, Mutter, Semi-Automatic and Tresor.

Peter began releasing records on the Synewave label, including the joint Niteworks project with Damon Wild. He soon launched his own label, Soleil Records, starting with his self-titled EP The World Energy and touring internationally to major venues in Europe, Japan, Australia and America. After a special invitation, he performed live both during the Ostgut Ton Label showcase at the Glasgow School of Arts and during the label's showcases in Berghain in Berlin, as well as numerous festivals such as Awakenings, Creamfields, DEMF and others.

Peter wanted to push his sound to the limits. After recording many albums in the Detroit techno and electro style, he wanted to return to his early experiences with EBM, industrial, and experimental music of Polish radio. In 2015, his album Post Scriptum 01 was unexpectedly released. Initially strategically planned for legendary Detroit producer Jeff Mills' Mission 6677 label, Post Scriptum 01 was released by another legend Dave Function's Infrastructure New York.

Initially, Post Scriptum was a secret project, created under the pressure of exclusivity requirements imposed on Peter by one of the German producers from Berlin. However, faith in this project was restored when Peter performed at the Ostgut Ton Showcase with Dave Function and Marcel Dettmann. Dave did not hesitate to sign Peter's album, which soon became one of the best techno albums of 2015, recognized by respected media.

Peter gave the project a fresh nuclear sound and Function incorporated it into his Berghain 07 mix, impressed by this subtle futuristic, artistic, tactfully produced and detailed electronic music. Peter perfected his sound, releasing in Ostgut Ton, Infrastructure alongside such industrial luminaries as Rrose, Silent Servant and Vatican Shadow. In a short time, this project took Peter to the next level, where during the tour he performed live at Berghain in Berlin, the 10th edition of the Audioriver festival in Plock, the cultivated Atonal Festival in Berlin, Reaktor in Amsterdam, and also played in top clubs around the world.

2017 saw an even bolder move towards heavy bass noise and more surprising songwriting structures with the Until You Drop EP, released on Adam X's legendary Sonic Groove label. In addition to the above-mentioned labels, Post Scriptum's tracks have so far been released on such labels such as: Synewave, Animal Farm, K7, Dekmantel, International Day Off, Subtstratum, RYC, Groove Magazine and XLR8R.

Despite being highly underrated in his native Poland, Peter has achieved a milestone that makes him stand out in the electronic music scene. To date, he has performed at the iconic Berghain an extraordinary nine times. This is a feat achieved only by a select few producers who are not residents of this legendary club. Peter has the honor of being the only Polish artist who can boast of such a prestigious achievement, thus strengthening his status as a pioneer in the world of techno.

In 2024, Peter will once again revolutionize the techno landscape. Using his electrifying energy as a professional and certified trainer and coach, he launches "People Make Techno". This innovative initiative aims to bring his extensive skills and knowledge to the next generation of electronic music artists around the world, offering an interactive and creative learning experience like no other.

Soleil Records, a cornerstone of his legacy, recently celebrated its rebirth with the release of Echoplex's new EP - The Light Strike, which marks the 22nd entry in its catalog. With upcoming releases on Soleil and a special live performance by Post Scriptum at Muse Festival 2024, the future promises an even more dynamic chapter. Peter intends to explore uncharted territories of the world of electronic music, bringing to life his visionary projects such as Dark as you like or the enigmatic DC Project together with Adam Szlachta aka Free Monoid. Also cooperating with the Mozg club in Bydgoszcz, performing at special events. Combining an unwavering love and passion for timeless experimental music that pushes boundaries and ignites the audience's imagination.

Free Monoid

Free Monoid is a musical explorer, improviser, guitarist. Having been raised on music from the 90-ties, he remains with the indelible sentiment for the aesthetics of those years. In his youth, he was a fan of heavy metal sounds and energetic guitar riffs. In the mid-2000s, he gained stage experience as a guitarist in the progressive band Goblin Market. Over time, feeling exploited by hard rock sounds, on one hand, he developed a fascination with jazz, however, on the other hand, he also developed an interest in electronic music in various genres: drum'n'bass, dubstep, psytrance, and techno, to which he remains faithful to this day. He is fascinated by what is sublime, elusive and hypnotic in music. Absorbed by the unlimited possibilities of creating new sounds, he mainly devotes himself to improvisation, occasionally supporting Post Scriptum in joint projects, both studio and stage.

Audiovisual biofeedback performance for a dancer and instrumentalists. The dancer's brainwaves, translated in real-time into sound and animations, create the structure of the performance and provide material for improvisation. Simultaneously, the instrumentalists' gestures supply new stimuli for the dancer, which are directly reflected in the graphic and sound forms generated from the dancer's EEG. This results in an open form with multiple feedback loops between the participants.

Piotr Grygor

Piotr Grygor curator is an audiovisual artist and an academic teacher. Engaged in generative, algorithmic art, audio performance, and improvised music. Grygor translates life processes of organisms into sounds and images, creates music with plants, insects and paints with brainwaves. He has developed a concept of bionic audiovisual improvisation—open, reactive environments, inspired by natural habitats or processes. He explores various techniques of video and audio synthesis. In his performances, he very often uses analog electronics, enabling complex, unique behaviors and a constant influx of generative and reactive audiovisual forms. He is an initiator, participant, and curator of interdisciplinary activities, integrating image, sound, movement, improvisation, and interaction. Grygor is the author of performances and workshops based on transpositions of life processes of organisms into sound and image, such as "Sounds of Plants" and "Concerts for Brainwaves". He is associated with the improvised and electronic music scene of MOZG Art Centre in Bydgoszcz.

As curator of the event, I decided to invite my long-time musical partner Mateusz Wysocki, with whom we are active under the IFS banner. After the collaborations undertaken with national rappers such as Kosi, Prykson Fisk, Bryndal and Ñemy, and the album recorded with the Japanese MA, who uses the whole spectrum of avant-garde techniques, it was a logical move to go in the direction of further exploring the possibilities of the human voice and discovering its new registers. During one of the conversations with REIFSMA's publisher, Paweł Dunajko, the idea of inviting Antye Greie-Ripatti, an artist known for her very broad spectrum of interests, moving both in the field of modern electronics and sound poetry, to the project came up. Participation in the Bydgoszcz Experiment Studio will be the beginning of the preparation of joint sound material for us, which will finally take the form of an album.

Krzysztof Ostrowski

Krzysztof Ostrowski

Krzysztof “Freeze” Ostrowski curatoris a musician, instrumentalist and producer from Bydgoszcz, most often associated with the widely known electronic scene. About

The Bydgoszcz Experiment Studio project involves the creation and implementation of a series regular events whose main goal is to build a platform for innovative and uncompromising creative activities, independent of financial and economic conditions.

BSE has been carried out in the Mózg club for many years and is a workshop space for local artists who meet regularly, also inviting domestic and foreign artists to cooperate. This year, BSE was included in the list of projects thanks to which Bydgoszcz was included on the UNESCO list as a City of Music, which will provide an opportunity to develop the idea of the experiment.

The project will include unlimited sound/musical activities stylistic and interdisciplinary activities in which sound plays a key role.

The BSE program is created as follows: The author of the project, Sławek Janicki, invited to cooperation of three curators: Piotr Grygor, Agnieszka Bykowska, Krzysztof Ostrowski. The curators create four, two-day events to which they invite Polish and foreign. Under the supervision of a curator, artists create a new, interdisciplinary work.

The artists' work is audiovisually documented, and a film is created after each meeting presenting the artists and showing the creation process.

On the second day, each part project, a public presentation of the resulting work takes place.

4 presentations of this year's project are scheduled for: July 26, August 2, August 16, September 26.

The Bydgoszcz Experiment Studio is part of The Platform of Newly Created Transgressive Sounds project, included in the City of Bydgoszcz application as part of applying for entry into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
The project is implemented with funds from the Bydgoszcz UNESCO City of Music program.
